Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use the included controller?

You must always use a controller between the solar panel and your battery, but if you have your own solar controller (e.g. built into a camper trailer or RV) you can use that instead. We include an Anderson plug connector in the box.

How do I position my solar blanket?

You can place your solar mat anywhere it receives direct sunlight. This might be on your windscreen or bonnet, on top of your awning, on your roof rack, or on the ground. You will experience a moderate increase in output if you are able to angle the panels 30-45° to the sun.

If one cell is shaded or blocked, does the whole blanket stop producing electricity?

No. Our blanket is designed with bypass diodes to ensure that if one cell is not producing power the rest of the cells are unaffected.

Can I leave my blanket out in the weather?

Yes, Hardkorr Lifestyle solar blankets are designed to withstand rain. However, your panel will not generally produce much electricity during inclement weather so we recommend you bring it inside at these times. If your solar mat gets wet, please ensure it is thoroughly dried prior to storage.

Which panel do I need for my setup?

Start by finding out the total current draw of all the equipment you wish to use. Multiply this figure by the number of hours the equipment is generally used to get the total amp hours consumed. Solar panels can generally provide their stated output for 8 hours per day, so multiply the stated output by 8 hours to find out how many amp hours your solar mat can provide. Here’s a worked example:

You use a Hardkorr 6-bar camp kit for 4 hours per day (3A x 4h = 12Ah)
You use a fridge for 24 hours per day that draws 1.5A per hour (1.5A x 24h = 36Ah)
You use a TV for 3 hours per day that draws 5A per hour (5A x 3h = 15Ah)
Total consumption = 63Ah
Add 25% buffer = 63 x 1.25 = 78.75Ah
Solar panel output required = 78.75Ah / 8 = 9.84A
Hardkorr’s Lifestyle 200w portable solar blanket produces up to 10.7A per hour on a clear day and will be sufficient in these circumstances.

    Thanks

  3. Richard Hateley (verified owner)

Had it hooked to my battery(100ah) under bonnet thru projector dc dc, then had the another 100ah batt in the back ( in hard korr batt box) of the wagon, i didnt have an amp meter but it was putting back 14.8v easily in no time at all, we ran a 40lt waeco as a freezer and a 60lt engal as frodge for 4 days without a prob, im very happy with my purchase

  4. Paul Gordon (verified owner)

Folds up and fits perfectly in the drawers in the back of our 4WD. Perfect size to lie on the windscreen/bonnet. We bought it to for our fridge and it performed really well in bright sunshine and maintained battery level while overcast. Overall we are really happy with the purchase.

  5. Seamus Jones

Recently bought as needed solar to run my fridge for a last minute trip and it performed flawlessly even after it was partly submerged in te rear footwell while me car was stuck in a bog hole for 3 hrs

  6. ryanjohnson1985 (verified owner)

Quality of the Solar Panel seems very good and in recent use was pulling in just under 10A in full sun using my built in dc/dc charger’s solar input. The quality of the 6m cable that came with the blanket was quite poor, the Anderson connector was not crimped correctly and the cable didn’t work. I contacted support, only to be offered a replacement terminal that I need to fit myself. I just ended up going out and purchasing a separate Anderson extension lead to use.
